Churchill’s Shakespeare: the Statesman’s Lifelong Debt to his National Poet

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill is still remembered for his powerful oratory, which was influenced by his lifelong familiarity with Shakespeare. Beginning with his memorization of Shakespeare in school to his later reading and viewing of the plays, Churchill captured Shakespeare’s rhythm and words in many of his own writings and speeches. This essay traces that influence and also touches on the reception of Shakespeare in Germany and Britain during the wars, and on the interaction of other members of Churchill’s family with the poet.
