Die Geschichte(n) gefalteter Bücher: Leporellos, Livres-Accordéon und Folded Panoramas in Literatur und bildender Kunst. Ed. Christoph Benjamin Schulz. Hildesheim: Olms, 2019.

“Forget the E-book,” the Danish literary critic Lars Bukdahl wrote in a review of a series of accordion books in 2009, “the future belongs to the folded book.” Quoting this in his chapter on Danish avantgarde accordions since the 1960s in the book presented here, Thomas Hvid Kromann goes on to explain why: it could be called a “potential book technology” because, despite its apparent simplicity, the folded book offers almost inexhaustible possibilities for design and appropriation precisely because of its unfoldability, the presence of a sequentiality, the order of the individual segments, and the simultaneity of the surface.
