The anecdote – both as a genre and as a way of storytelling in everyday life – can be defined by an opposition. On the one hand, there is the speaking anecdote as a clearly defined apophthegmatic form: it ends with a sentence which brings a given situation to the point and at the same time transcends it. On the other hand, there is the category of anecdotes which are determined by their historical matter: they are concerned with a minor incident claiming a facticity which cannot be integrated into the context of major history and therefore remains mute.
