This article interprets Schnitzler’s late novella against the background of Schopenhauer’s pessimistic philosophy of will. The protagonist Kasda has to be regarded as a passive individual who appears to be reciprocally determined by elementary desires of will and by empirical representations (i.e. images and their superficial conveyance of apparent purposes). On the stage of life, Kasda sustains his predetermined deadly fate as a gambler. The polyvalence of the German word “Spiel” (meaning theatrical acting and social role-play as well as gambling) actually represent a meeting of metaphysically, empirically, psychologically and sociologically determining factors in a structure of plain catastrophe and a behaviour of mere re-acting. Some allusionistic references to the antique concept of tragic fate, above all the myth of ‘Oedipus’, are implicitly quoted as a godless and tragicomical variant of disastrous fate. At the same time they are counteracted by a prosaic world void of miracles and symbolic signs, which is represented by gambling at cards, the abstract and arbitrary equivalences of money and by the motif of prostitution.
