Elke Dubbels: Figuren des Messianischen in Schriften Deutsch-Jüdischer Intellektueller 1900–1933
Elke Dubbels’ study “Figuren des Messianischen in Schriften Deutsch-Jüdischer Intellektueller 1900–1933” explores the variety of conceptualizations of the messianic in the writings of German-Jewish thinkers of the late Wilhelmine Empire and the Weimar Republic. Although this period is the study’s main focus, it reaches even further, tracing the manifestations, fate, and function of Jewish messianic thought in philosophy from Franz Rosenzweig to Giorgio Agamben. Noting the frequent degeneration of the term into a vague cliché, Dubbels succeeds masterfully at counteracting the lack of conceptual clarity in current scholarship.
