This article reviews the concept of feeling (“Gefühl”), which becomes crucial for the definition of the self during the last third of the 18th Century. The contemporary definition of feeling as a “sense of self” (“Selbstgefühl”) implies that any reference to the environment is now consistently grounded in the reference to the self. This notion corresponds to the new doctrine of epigenesis and the organism. The concept of the formation of organic life (“Bildung”) in this doctrine can be transferred to the soul (Joh. N. Tetens). This allows for histories of the development of man which successively integrate the inner self (Gefühl) and the outside world (situations, conditions). Placed against this background, the realism of the “Sturm und Drang” is conceived as comprising both inner imagination and the documentation of the outside world.
