Learning to See with Goethe’s “Zur Farbenlehre”

Die Form des Textes, den Goethe für sein eigentliches Hauptwerk hielt – „Zur Farbenlehre“ –, wurde von der Forschung weitgehend vernachlässigt. Dieser Befund dürfte überraschen angesichts der enormen Bedeutung, die Goethe der formalen Gestaltung seines Werks beimaß. Die Rahmenthese des folgenden Beitrags lautet: Für Goethe bildet die kleine Form des Paragraphen ein strategisches Mittel, spezifische methodologische Desiderata zu berücksichtigen. Genauer gesagt erlaubt die kleine Form dem Leser ein erstpersönliches Nachspüren und Wiederholen von Experiment-Reihen. Dabei soll der Leser in das praktische Vermögen eingeübt werden, die Harmonie und Totalität der im Farbkreis enthaltenen Farbtypen zu erkennen.

The form of the text that Goethe regarded as his true magnum opus, “Zur Farbenlehre” (‘Theory of Colors’), has been largely neglected by researchers. This is surprising given the profound importance Goethe assigned to its design. The following essay argues that Goethe strategically employs the small paragraph form in order to fulfill specific methodological aims. In particular, the small paragraph form affords the reader the means to follow and repeat, firsthand, series of experiments and thereby acquire the practical ability to recognize the harmony and totality of the color types which that up Goethe’s famous color wheel.
