In this article, the heavenly places and the two hells which are described in ‚Brandans Reise‘ (12th century) have been placed in their literary and theological context. It is shown that the ‚two paradises and three heavens‘ which are mentioned in the introduction of the story do feature in the story proper and that the author of the ‚Reise‘ did not derive these notions from the works of Johannes Scotus Eriugena. Strange phenomena such as a ‚paradise of angels‘ and an ‚infernal lake‘ are also clarified.
