GIS-based soil erosion models are nowadays important for the assessment of sheet and linear soil erosion. Geo-information systems as modeling environment can be a practicable, effective and cheap instrument for the modeling of soil erosion by using the ability to include geo- and climate data with high spatial resolution. In the study presented below land use scenarios and measures for the mitigation and control of soil erosion were tested and visualized in GIS. The simulation of reality-, best- and worst-case assumptions of the c-factor (cover and treatment factor) reflects the range of potential types of land use. Calculations with modified DTM simulating agro-forestry systems as precaution against soil erosion have been carried out for a test site in order to assess their effect on soil loss in the research area. The results of these simulations were detailed soil erosion maps which identify potential vulnerable sites and show the effect of measures able to minimize soil erosion. The research areas are situated in the two model regions Sprendlingen-Gensingen and Rockenhausen in Rhineland-Palatinate.
