This article traces the idiom [Perlen] [vor die Säue] [werfen] (‘to cast pearls before swine’) from the earliest occurrences in “Tatian” and “Heliand” until today. The lexical assignments in the three slots vary considerably over time and show how malleable the idiom is and how malleable the concept of idiom should be. In the same way, text types and the ways in which they are used vary. The methodical approach is corpus-based and uses methods of distributive semantics.
