Kontingenzerfahrung.

The courtly love potion is a magical gift that accidentally binds courtship helper and bride together. Gottfried shifts the logic of giving and receiving. The drinking of the potion is contingent. The potential for violence in the gift is of an internal nature: it consists of a lifelong compulsion and poisons the couple, leading them to an eternal death. The exclusion of any gift in return means that there is no bargaining in the sense of the archaic legal formula do ut des. The character of the gift itself is obscured. But the exchange value may lie in the commitment to eternal death, which marks the aporetic structure of this gift: in the surrender and obsession, the giving up of life becomes an inordinate sacrifice.
