In advance of realism, Berthold Auerbach formulated the theoretical literary program of the “ideal transfiguration” of reality with a political intention. He saw literature, in contrast to bureaucracy, as a practice of writing which strives to capture the inherent ideality in the life of the “people”, with the purpose of bringing changes in the forms of life to completion. This poetics of “folk” literature is based on Spinoza’s ontology of substance and the associated ethics of perfection through an understanding of the nature of things.
