The production of textiles is associated with high water consumption and with the use of high amounts of chemicals and raw materials. Clothing textiles are mainly produced in countries of the global south where the production contributes to high environmental pollution. The amount of textiles sold, and thus the amount of used textiles collected, is constantly increasing. One reason is shortened usage cycles. A functioning circular economy is a good way of counteracting the textile industry’s increasing consumption of resources, but this requires, among other things, the further development of sorting and recycling technologies. However, a circular economy alone is not sufficient. In addition, business models and consumption structures have to change in order to achieve a reduction in overall resource consumption.
