While literary criticism on Wolfgang Hilbig has up to now primarily concentrated on his prose, this article seeks to reconstruct a significant yet overlooked aspect of his poetology in his early poetry. It shows how by means of the motif of water, Hilbig develops a topological structure of surface and depth, in which reflections on hermeneutics and genre theory are exemplarily integrated. The potential of various types of text to function as instruments of understanding is played out in poetically enacted processes of reading which demonstrate and reflect the limits and aporias of language and text.
