„Mittelpunkt deutscher Geschichten“. Zur politischen Symbolik der „Karte von Schwaben“ in Achim von Arnims „Die Kronenwächter“

Arnims „Kronenwächter“ sind immer wieder auf die staatlich-politische Umbruchszeit von 1806–1815 bezogen worden. In seinem Roman baut Arnim mit der „Karte von Schwaben“ ein symbolisches Dispositiv ein, das eine präzise Bestimmung seiner Position in der Diskussion um Reich und Verfassung erlaubt, wenn man den Hinweisen auf die historische Referenzkarte nachgeht, die hier erstmals identifiziert und für die Interpretation des Romans nutzbar gemacht wird.

Arnim’s novel “Die Kronenwächter” has frequently been read in the context of the political ideas of the period between the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, and the defeat of Napoleon with the subsequent restorative policies after the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The ‘map of Swabia’, however, allows us to substantiate the position the novel takes in the discussion on the Empire and the Constitution more precisely, if one follows the hints about the historical map that Arnim alludes to. The article identifies this map for the first time and draws conclusions from it for the interpretation of the novel.
