„Nibelungenlied“ *A

The discovery in 1988 of remains of the opening stanzas soon made clear that manuscript L and its direct copy g belong to version *A of the “Nibelungenlied”. However, the fragments Lg show a much closer relationship to version *B than the reference manuscript A. It follows that the text appears to have been arbitrarily modified in manuscript A. Furthermore, the reduced number of stanzas in A needs to be considered: Lg contained at least five additional stanzas. For research on the “Nibelungenlied”, this means that the position of version *A must be redefined. – An appendix presents arguments for the assignment of manuscript M to version *B.
