Poetischer Realismus in der ‚Maske des Mythos‘: Conrad Ferdinand Meyers „Schuß von der Kanzel“

Conrad Ferdinand Meyer kann auch insofern als typischer Vertreter des Poetischen Realismus gelten, als er sich im Gefolge der ‚neuen Mythologie‘ der Kunstperiode mythisierender Verfahrensweisen bedient, dies allerdings verdeckt. Am Beispiel der Figuren im „Schuß von der Kanzel“ zeigt sich, dass die ‚mythische Behandlung‘ einerseits typisierend wirkt und Idealbilder (wie Rahel) schafft, also einen willkommenen Ästhetisierungseffekt hat. Andererseits zeitigt sie eine palimpsestartige Gestalt wie General Wertmüller, der als neuer Hades(-Pluto)-Dionysos die Gründerzeit ironisch kommentiert und darüber hinaus die triebgesteuerte ‚wahre Natur‘ des Menschen entlarvt. Hinter der ‚Maske des Mythos‘ verbirgt sich also weniger Meyers Streben nach Klassizität als nach Modernität – der erste Symbolist profiliert sich auch als Zeitgenosse Sigmund Freuds und der Naturalisten.

Conrad Ferdinand Meyer can also be regarded as a typical Poetic Realist as he, in the tradition of the ‘new mythology’ of the period, makes use of a ‘mythical method’, even if this is obscured. The figures in “Der Schuß von der Kanzel” (The Shot from the Pulpit) are used to show that, on the one hand, the ‘mythical method’ creates types and ideals (Rahel), which is otherwise an effect of poetry. On the other hand there is a palimpsest-like figure, General Wertmüller, who as a new Hades(-Pluto)-Dionysos makes an ironic comment on the ‘Gründerzeit’ and also reveals the true licentious nature of humankind. Behind the ‘mythical mask’ lies not so much Meyer’s aspiration to classicism, but rather his aspiration to modernism – the first symbolist distinguishes himself as a contemporary of Sigmund Freud and the Naturalists.
