In comparison with the French original, Hartmann von Aue viewed Erec and Enite's love marriage as a problem of gender identities. It seems at first as though the two protagonists can only live together by giving up the gender identity of one of the partners. In the course of the romance, however, Hartmann shows, particularly with regard to Enite's service as schiltkneht (attending to Erec's horse and armour), that the woman, in contrast to the man, is able to transcend the boundaries to the other gender without losing her identity.
