Semiramis

The article takes the phantasm of the great woman found in ancient literature as its starting point in order to analyse significant late antique and medieval tales of Semiramis up to and including the brief mention of her in Dante’s “Divina Commedia”. The focus of the article is an analysis of the specific function of the Semiramis episode in Rudolf von Ems’s “Weltchronik” ('World Chronicle'): Her story is functionally connected to the split into main plot and nebinganc (subplot) and its underpinning in salvation history by the distinction between the theocratic state and the worldly state. At the same time the study shows that Rudolf drew on Orosius, Frutolf of Michelsberg, Honorius Augustodunensis and Otto of Freising in the passage in question.
