The following essay discusses the different facets of 'pathos' in Georg Büchner's play "Dantons Tod". Büchner's first work is not only one of a number of plays after 1800 which break with traditional concepts of pathos: over and above the performance, the articulation of suffering and emotions as 'pathos' is the object of meta-theatrical reflection. Büchner's play does not present excesses of violence on stage; rather it raises the issue of the special gestures, the rhetoric and historical semantics which are associated with the epochal violence of the French Revolution. In a critique of the heroic poses of antiquity found in revolutionary propaganda, the commonplaces of the Laocoon debate, and the idealistic theory of tragedy, 'pathos' emerges as a highly ambivalent code for the expression of emotions and suffering. The rhetoric of revolution is criticised by Büchner and contrasted with a (sym)pathetic minimalism of vulnerable individuals.
