Behandlung biologisch abbaubarer Kunststoffabfälle in Deutschland

In Deutschland und Europa besteht ein kleiner, jedoch wachsender Markt für biologisch abbaubare Kunststoffe (BAK). BAK, deren Entsorgung und ihr Abbauverhalten werden jedoch kontrovers diskutiert. In der Folge gibt es europaweit unterschiedliche Ansichten über die ökologische Vorteilhaftigkeit von BAK und abweichende Ansätze im Umgang mit entsprechenden Abfällen. Im Auftrag des Umweltbundesamtes wurden in einem Gutachten unterschiedliche Ansätze und Entsorgungskonzepte für Deutschland, Italien, Frankreich, Niederlande und Schweden identifiziert und gegenübergestellt. Zudem wurde das Abbauverhalten von BAK unter Laborbedingungen sowie in der Umwelt analysiert und – darauf basierend – Empfehlungen für den Umgang mit in Deutschland besonders relevanten Produktgruppen unter aktuellen Rahmenbedingungen formuliert. In Germany and Europe there is a small but growing market for biodegradable plastics. However, there is controversial discussion regarding the use of biodegradable plastics, their treatment and degradation behavior. Subsequently there are different views across Europe about the ecological benefit of biodegradable plastics and different approaches in dealing with biodegradable plastic wastes in European countries exist. On behalf of the German Environment Agency the authors identified and compared different approaches and waste treatment concepts of Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands and Sweden in a comprehensive expert study. Furthermore, the degradability of biodegradable plastics under laboratory conditions as well as in the natural environment, was analysed and – based on this – recommendations for the waste treatment of relevant product groups in Germany under current conditions are given. The following article summarises the main findings of the expert study.
